Overview

Why are we undertaking a review of secondary schools in Perth?

We have invested in our secondary school buildings in Perth and Kinross that has included St John’s Academy at North Inch Community Campus, Bertha Park High School and the ongoing construction of the replacement Perth High School.

We also recognise that while those replacements are in place, both Perth Academy and Perth Grammar School buildings are ageing, and the condition of these schools means that ongoing upgrades are required in future years. To allow plans to be developed which meet the needs of our future generations of students, we are undertaking this survey to gather views for the vision of the secondary school estate in Perth City.

The schools involved in the review are: Bertha Park High School, Perth Academy, Perth Grammar School and Perth High School.   

St. John’s RC Academy is not part of the review as it is the only denominational secondary school and has different admission priorities.

In considering the future of our school buildings in Perth City we need to take into consideration projected pupil numbers and the needs of a modern learning environment, energy efficiency and options which make best use of public money.

This is an opportunity to look beyond simply refurbishing or replacing like for like facilities. We need to consider how the changing size and demography of Perth may influence the size, shape and location of buildings.

Why we want to hear from you

When considering the future demographics of the population of Perth and Kinross the secondary population, by 2043, is projected to be approximately 17% less than present. This is the equivalent of 658 pupils based on Census 2023. 

If changes are made, it could mean changes to school locations, the number of schools or catchment areas in the future. Should any changes be made, these will not be made in the short term, the vision is looking at the medium to long term and may be a minimum of 8 -10 years away.
