Refurbishment of Craigie Park, Perth

Closes 4 May 2025

Introduction

The play area at Craigie Road has served the community for many years, but it is now in need of improvement. The play surfacing has become worn and can be slippery, and in some areas, the edging is broken or missing. While the existing play equipment has provided plenty of fun over the years, much of it is now quite old, and there are currently no inclusive play options available.

At present, there is a surfaced path at the front of the play area, but no direct, accessible route connecting to Glenearn Road or Craigie Road. This can make it difficult for families with prams, cyclists, and wheelchair users to reach the space easily.

Behind the play area, an existing shrub bed has become overgrown and would benefit from revitalisation to create a more inviting and attractive space.

The play area is currently enclosed by a wire fence with two dog grid entrances and a vehicle maintenance gate. While practical, this gives the space a somewhat harsh and unwelcoming feel.

Summary of play area standards

We work to a ‘play strategy’ that determines the funds available to refurbish play areas and also the number of pieces of equipment required to service the size of the area. The location also determines the likely material the equipment will be manufactured from, ie timber or metal. Surfacing selection is also based on likely maintenance required.

Craigie Road play area is a neighbourhood play area designed to cater for 4-14 year olds in the local area.  A neighbourhood play area should provide play opportunities for 4-8 year olds and 8-14 year olds in separate areas and would usually include at least 6 pieces of play equipment offering a good variety of different activities.
