We asked what you think about the four priorities identified to be included in the Draft Tayside Strategy for Parents 2019-23.
You said
100% of parents agreed or strongly agreed that the priorities focus on the things that are important to them. You also told us what you thought was working well and identified areas you would like to see improvement. For example:
- Improved access to information to support parents throughout their parenting journey
- Improved schools communications to increase parental involvement, particularly focussing on parents of children aged 7 years and above.
- Creating a consistency of family learning programmes across Tayside.
- Promoting whole family approaches to assessments and service delivery.
- Developing training to increase engagement skills and awareness of a range of issues affecting parenting.
We did
The consultation informed the development of the Tayside Strategy for Parents 2019-2024 and parents views have been captured in a short animated video to promote the strategy to parents and service providers.
Work has started in relation to developing and delivering an action plan which will address the strategies improvement priorities. A further consultation with parents will help to inform this further.
Results updated 23 Jul 2019
66 parents attended the events representing a range of different parenting roles i.e. parents, step parent, grandparent, foster carers and kindship carers. Parents told us what was important to them and identified a range of issues that affect them in their parenting role. These issues included disability, health issues, caring for others, mental health issues, childs behaviour, managing on a low income and managing work:life balance. Overview
The Tayside Plan for Children, Young People and Families 2017-2020 identified the need to “develop and implement, in partnership, an evidence-based "Tayside Strategy for Parents”. The development of this Strategy is being co-ordinated though a Multi –agency partnership group, with representatives from NHS Tayside, Dundee Council, Angus Council, Perth & Kinross Council and the 3rd sector.
The Tayside Strategy for Parents aims to improve information and support so that ALL parents, and those with a parenting role are as equipped as possible to support their child or young person to grow up as happy, healthy and achieving as possible. In addition, it wants to help create a more equal community by ensuring the support required to enable those who need it to achieve can access what they need easily.
Initial consultation on the draft strategy (previously "The Tayside Parenting Strategy) was undertaken in 2018. This influenced how the draft strategy was worded, including changing the title from the Tayside Parenting Strategy to the Tayside Strategy for Parents , reflecting parental ownership and partnership in its design and delivery. We are now interested to gain more insight into what you think about the draft priorities identified in the previous engagement activities.
Why your views matter
The Tayside Collaborative recognises the integral role of parents in achieving this vision and therefore one of its first steps was to seek parents views on the development of a Tayside Strategy for Parents. In addition to birth-parents, a range of other adults are often involved in the parenting of children and young people. These could be step-parents, grandparents, aunts, uncles, other relatives, family friends, foster carers, etc. This consultation therefore seeks the views of parents and anyone with a parenting role.
We are particularly interested in your views on what is important to parents/carers and on the four priorities identified in earlier consultations. These are:
- Parents have access to good quality information that supports them make informed choices, plan for and meet their family’s needs.
- Communities are inclusive, understand children’s needs and support families to thrive.
- Families have access to effective services that are delivered by a skilled and confident workforce that value the role of parents.
- Policies that effect family life are supportive and deliver positive outcomes.
